Our Story

Meet Christina DiBernardo,
Founder and Executive Director

Expressive Connections was born from a longing for therapy that truly feels human.

Christina DiBernardo founded this practice after years of witnessing what happens when therapy becomes too clinical, too rigid, too disconnected from the messy beauty of real life.

She’d worked in settings where therapists barely had time to breathe between sessions, where creativity was seen as “extra” rather than essential, where the humanity of both client and therapist got lost in insurance codes and checkboxes on treatment plans.

She knew there had to be another way.

Christina DiBernardo

Christina’s vision for Expressive Connections came from her own winding path. As a former student-athlete, she understood how the body holds wisdom and how discipline can be both freeing and constraining. Her own therapy journey, with its moments of profound healing and disappointing harm, taught her that the relationship between therapist and client is sacred ground that deserves to be protected.

She learned firsthand that real change happens not through perfectly executed therapeutic techniques but through genuine connection, creative expression, and the radical act of being truly seen.

Connection is the foundation. Expression is the pathway.

Now, as a mother to her daughter Amelia, Christina experiences the vulnerability of caring deeply about another human’s wellbeing every day. She watches her daughter navigate big feelings and small triumphs, and it reminds her why this work matters. Why families need support that honors their wholeness, why therapists need space to be human too and why creativity and play aren’t luxuries but necessities for healing.

Today, Expressive Connections has grown into exactly what Christina envisioned: a place where therapists can practice with their whole hearts, where clients are met with genuine care rather than clinical distance and where the creative spirit is honored alongside evidence-based practice. It’s a home for those who believe therapy should feel like coming back to yourself, not performing for someone else’s expectations.

We’re still growing, still learning and still discovering new ways to support the families and individuals who trust us with their stories.

Our story is still unfolding, just like yours. And that’s exactly how it should be.

Why Expressive Connections

In a culture that asks you to optimize everything from your morning routine to your productivity and even your parenting, we believe in the radical act of slowing down and feeling what’s actually there. Not fixing, not rushing, not performing wellness. Just being human in all its messy complexity.

We founded Expressive Connections because we believe therapy should honor the whole person. Your creativity and your struggles. Your body’s wisdom and your mind’s patterns. The parts of you that shine and the parts you hide. We know that real change doesn’t come from following a prescribed program or powering through. It comes from finally having space to exhale, to experiment, to express what’s been locked inside.

Our name isn’t accidental.

Expression through art, movement, play, or words opens doors that talking alone can’t always reach. And genuine, attuned, human connection is where healing actually happens. Not in worksheets or apps or self-help mantras, but in the space between two people where you can finally be seen without judgment.

So much of mental health care has become rushed, automated, and impersonal. We believe you deserve better. This is therapy that trusts your inner wisdom while supporting you in finding it. It honors where you’ve been while helping you grow toward where you’re going. And it believes in your capacity for change while accepting exactly who you are right now.

This is therapy as it should be. Human, creative, and real.
